A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” declared the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in civilian works. They were executed at an rapid pace, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party urged an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
