The Former President's Woke Alarm Misses Europe's True Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" agendas pose an existential risk to European civilization. However, this perspective rests on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The true challenge facing Europe is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Gap Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, compared to a mere 13.5% increase for the European Union. Over this period, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly half of the world’s top fifty tech companies are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Problem

The growing economic gap is driven by superior productivity growth in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at over $10bn, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity raises a vital issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Most analysts concede it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with European nations entering at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

Several major factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and agile network for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true capital markets union, a factor that limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hamper European business. A US startup can launch a service under one regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among twenty-seven separate systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the single market point to the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable advantages: high-quality workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and premier labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically boost productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
